After the winter and rainy spring we've had, my body has been craving sun and sea. When I heard it was going to be 90 degrees on Memorial Day, I decided to plan a trip to Far Rockaway for an NYC beach excursion including Rockaway Taco. The NYC beaches are kind of ridiculously cool (how could a beach 40 minutes from Manhattan not be?), I wouldn't be surprised if 10 years from now the projects were completely taken over by expensive condos. After the glorious day I had there with my roomies, friends and interesting strangers from all over the boroughs, I'm actually considering investing in some beach front property. Who's in? Rockaway Taco is also featured in an article I wrote for Refinery29 here.)
Yesterday I teamed up with Rex Arrow Films to set choreography on a music video for the very talented gentleman, Theo Martins. I've been doing more and more film work and I'm starting to feel like that's really where it's at. "It" being my imaginary future, that is. I don't think I'll ever give up making work for the stage and live performance, but I am learning that the process is a tumultuous one, physically and emotionally. Choreographing for film is a totally different experience, and the film environment in general has its own special energy. I love being on set, directing dancers, and helping to create a cohesive aesthetic for each shot...sometimes in only a couple of minutes. I had about a week and a half to work on the moves for the video (NOT a lot of time for said job) but my dancers were super capable and smart, which always makes on- the- spot changes easier. The vibe of the vid is inspired by Robert Palmer's "Simply Irresistible", but I'd like to think I was able to mix in a little bit of "Single Ladies" sexiness, too ;) Stay tuned for the preview!
"A green room is a room in a theater, studio, or other public venue for the accommodation of performers when not required on the stage. Its function is as a break/touch-up lounge so that performers do not have to go back to wardrobe/dressing rooms and are still easily accessible for their call. The term is often attributed to the area historically being painted green [1][2] however in modern use the area may or may not include any green in its color scheme. The color green; the perception of which is evoked by light having a spectrum dominated by energy with a wavelength of roughly 520–570 nanometres."- Wikipedia
