Safer NYC Cycling Now!

May is bike month in NYC!
Yes, I know it’s still April, but the city needs your help to make cyclists and pedestrians safer. It’s tragic enough that in the past two days walking around Brooklyn and Manhattan, I counted 6 ghost bikes on my route. But the stories of individuals alone are unfortunately not enough for administrators to take action.

On April 28th, at 10:00 am, show your support for The Saving Lives Through Better Information Bill, which will require the NYPD to release important traffic-related statistics on its website. Armed with real statistics, communities can advocate for safer laws for cyclists and pedestrians using more than just anecdotal evidence.

The Saving Lives Through Better Information Bill states the following shocking statistics:

1. More than 250 New Yorkers were killed on New York City's roads in 2009. Injuries to pedestrians exceed 10,000 annually.
2. Being hit by a car remains the number one cause of injury-related deaths in children 1-14 years of age and the second leading cause of these deaths in those over the age of 45.

So, in order to make this May the safest NYC bike month yet, support The Saving Lives Through Better Information Bill, strap on your helmet, and start riding!

Check out Transportation Alternatives, Bike Month NYC, and Bike New York for other ways you can help make NYC safer for pedestrians and cyclists (aka everyone including you!).
