It Was Acceptable in The 80s

"Trees cause more pollution than automobiles do" "If you've seen one tree, you've seen them all"
~President Reagan~

Politics like that may have been acceptable in the '80s, but the time has come for change, which we will hopefully see once Obama gets things shakin'. While we're waiting for that party to start, we might just have to make one of our own, in honor of the '80s babies who got Obama elected in the first place.

A Green Christmas

Want to know just how green a Christmas tree can be? Read this article from the NY Times to find out about pesticide free
trees for this holiday season. Thanks to Elise for finding this bit of info!

Catch It While You Can

Below are some photographs from i.anton, my latest flickr contact. Her ethereal work conveys the fleeting beauty of nature- in case you need yet another reason to fight for its preservation. The image quality is much better on Flickr, so definitely check her out: i.anton

Throw Back: The Gully

Ever since I was a little girl I have been passionate about the environment. Fern Gully was my favorite movie, and when the town bad guy Stealin Plotsker* came to cut down the woods behind my home (tree-house and all) to develop a complex of condominiums I was devastated. Secretly relishing the idea of saving my own forest, I went out there with my can of (eco- friendly) paint and sprayed green over all the red 'X's he had put on the trees he planned to cut down. My mother and father banded together with our neighborhood to petition against the development, and, although my tree-house still got the ax, we were spared a few trees and instead of the condos, he just built three McMansions.

Recently, in Duane Reade of all places, I was thrown back to those glorious days of playing outside in my magical woods when, at the register, I came face to face with a copy of Fern Gully on DVD! Of course I bought it, and commenced watching my old time fave as soon as I got back to my apartment. Here is a clip for you in case you need a reminder of just how awesome and relevant this movie was and still is:

ME SO HAPPY :)

Walking by the Sushi station at Whole Foods in Union Square the other day, I stumbled upon a little bottle with a red cap. It's called Genji Ginger Miso Dressing, and I am hooked! I put it on/in everything from rice to salad to toast. It is thick and creamy and the perfect fix when I can't splurge on Sushi. I could end there, but, seeing as we are in the midst of an economic crisis of epic proportions, I should say that I cringe to spend $4.99 on such a little portion- even when it's as seemingly miraculous as Genji Ginger Miso Dressing is. So you can imagine my joy when I found this recipe for homemade ginger miso dressing on the Whole Foods website. Now I can make make it economically at home!
